Evergreen Packaging Inc.'s solid bleached sulfate (SBS) board mill in Canton, N.C., is polluting the Pigeon River, alleges a Tennessee attorney, who filed papers Aug. 17 with U.S. District Court in Asheville, N.C., seeking a class action worth at least $5 million against Evergreen, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported Oct. 19
Attorney Gordon Ball said the mill dumps chemicals that have turned the river brown, caused an odor, and made it foam. He represents three landowners along the fiver in Clyde who said the Canton mill pollution damaged their quality of life and prevented them from using their property.
