This Christmas I bought a fruitcake. I know, go ahead, laugh, snicker, and mumble under your breath. But I remember a time when a true Southern fruitcake was a work of art and a labor of love.
Mrs. Fortenberry from McComb sells homemade jellies, jams, and during the Christmas season, homemade fruitcakes. There was something familiar about the look, weight, and smell of her fruitcakes that enticed me to buy several for our gift shop. Naturally, I told my wife Celia Elizabeth I would have to do quality control on the product, and proceeded to sample several slices. She does not understand my affinity for fruitcake, which goes back to my childhood on the farm.
