WHO'S WORRIED? RETAILERS FORGE AHEAD

NEW YORK -- Retailers navigated the battery of trade shows held here this week in a buying mood.

Apparently unshaken by Wall Street's gyrations and the seemingly endless negative economic dispatches from around the globe, the independent merchants, who make up much of the audience for these events, kept their focus on business. And happily so.

Buoyed by their customers' receptivity to fall's fashion, the retailers seemed confident they could keep the momentum going into spring, as they viewed the array of offerings on display at the various events.
