The controversial, 150-mile long, $180 million power line proposed by Colorado s two largest utilities to carry renewable energy out of the sunny San Luis Valley will have to undergo a thorough environmental study to get federal funding, the Rural Utilities Service said Thursday.

The utilities, Xcel Energy Inc. and Westminster-based Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, had been doing an environmental assessment of the project, which is called the Southern Colorado Transmission Project. Now, it will undergo a larger study resulting in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
