The planned expansion of the Matla coal mine, in Witbank, Mpumalanga, has been given the green light follow- ing the approval of the project s wetland management and monitoring plan (WMMP) by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).
The expansion is seen as critical as the mine is a major supplier of coal to the nearby Matla baseload power station, which supplies 12,5% of South Africa s electricity. If the mine is not extended, it will not be able to continue supplying 600 000 t/m of coal to the power station.
