This has been a rough and tumble year for the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. On the upside, the museum has gotten the green light to erect a 65,000-square-foot addition being designed by noted Italian architect Renzo Piano. Just last week the museum announced that it has raised more than $100 million in gifts and pledges toward design, construction costs and operating endowment in advance of launching its public appeal for support.
On the downside, the museum has had to weather media critiques questioning the wisdom and viability of the project - the sort of publicity that can hamper raising large amounts of money in a depressed ...
