A later Labor Day this year and the release of Titanic on video helped propel national retail sales in the first week of September, two tracking services noted.
According to LJR Redbook Research, national retail sales gained 1.3 percent in the first week of September compared with the same period in August. The report also shows seasonally adjusted sales in the one-week period increased 9.3 percent from the same period in 1997.
