ON November 9, 1989, a spokesman for the East German government announced during a Press conference East Berliners would be allowed to cross the border into West Berlin.

Immediately crowds began gathering at either side of the wall and overwhelmed guards began letting people cross through into the other side of Berlin with crowds cheering as the historic crossings began.

Soon people across the world were glued to their TV screens as footage showed the dismantling of a poignant symbol of the division between Eastern and Western Europe.
