Speed in picking can be a good thing - if it can be done without sacrificing accuracy and it doesn't put up costs. There is a balance to be maintained, but has that balance changed in the recession? And will it change again as business picks up? Malory Davies investigates.

The word "picking" has a reassuringly low-tech ring to it, but the commonplace nature of the word belies the critical nature of the function. Get it wrong and problems will start coming at you from all directions - costs can mount rapidly, stores can run out of product, customers can desert you.
