Journalists and writing teachers countrywide know about Donald Murray, who while working at the Boston Herald back in 1954 became the youngest person ever to win the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. A few know of Murray the artist, as sketched in his teenage self-portrait. Still fewer know about Murray the two-time high school dropout.
Murray's workroom today barely resembles that small closet off his invalid grandmother's room where he honed his craft to an art. Situated in the New Hampshire hills, his basement study looks into a lush wooded area that inspires him to write 365 days a year--"Never a day without a line," as Horace wrote, is his guiding light. ...
