Bank-failure tally: Regulators on Friday shut banks in California, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota and Missouri, bringing the number of bank failures this year to 120 amid the struggling economy and a cascade of loan defaults. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. took over the United Commercial Bank of San Francisco, whose 63 branches include lending offices in Bellevue and Seattle; United Security Bank, Sparta, Ga.; Home Federal Savings Bank in Detroit; Prosperan Bank, Oakdale, Minn.; and Gateway Bank in St. Louis. With United Security, 21 Georgia banks have failed this year, more than any other state.
