JAMES CLERK MAXWELL
THE physicist is best known for his formulation of electro-magnetic theory - and without his work there would be no mobile phones, TV or radio.
He is ranked alongside Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein for the fundamental nature of his contributions.
Clerk Maxwell's formulation of electro-magnetic theory paved the way for Einstein's special theory of relativity.
His ideas also ushered in the other major innovation of 20th-century physics, the quantum theory.
As Einstein put it: "One scientific epoch ended ...
