Ohio's alternative-energy effort has received a $17.5 million shot in the arm as four projects - two based in central Ohio - were awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Marysville-based Univenture Inc./Algaeventure Systems received nearly $6 million to develop a system that makes algae-based biofuel more economical.

Algae can produce 20,000 gallons of alternative fuel per acre of farmland, said Ross Youngs, founder and CEO of Algaeventure Systems. By using algae, 3.7 percent of Ohio's existing farmland could generate enough biofuel to equal the amount of energy generated by Ohio's total annual petroleum use.
