The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved an 8Fr 50cc intra-aortic balloon (IAB) catheter developed by Maquet Cardiovascular LLC.
This is the world's first such IAB with a true 8Fr shaft, according to the company, which launched the product at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) convention, held in September in San Francisco, California. Trademarked Mega, the IAB has a smaller insertion point than traditional 50cc IABs and offers additional blood volume displacement for intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation.
