A few years ago I chaired a committee tasked with developing a plan and design guidelines for the built environment in Ithaca's Collegetown district. Much time was spent discussing building heights, set-back requirements, transportation and parking, green space, density and, since a majority of the residents are students who wish to live near the main gateway to the Cornell campus, how to maximize housing units while preserving the area's historical character.
