At first glance, the advertisements that appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Black Issues in Higher Education, and Hispanic Outlook during spring of 1997 must have stirred the imagination of many a faculty member. "The Ground Is Broken!" "Become a Part of the Rare Academic Adventure of Establishing a New State University," an institution "committed to implementing, supporting, and rewarding new and innovative techniques...." Join a faculty that will be marked by "an overall willingness to experiment, assess, change and laugh." Then came the clincher: the new campus was located between Fort Myers and Naples, Florida.
