Marv Zimmerman and I took a drive the other day, in distance and in time, by way of observing Veterans Day, which is Wednesday. We went to the town of Hastings, where Marv used to live. He's in Galeville now.
Marv is 88, a World War II veteran with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star who fought in the famed Battle of the Bulge, which historians call the war's bloodiest. We took the ride on a cool fall day because Marv wanted to draw my attention to how dearly small towns like Central Square, Mallory, Hastings and Parish paid for the young warriors they sent to World War II.
