Despite the economic recession, the United Way of Central New York has raised $4.34 million so far in its 2009 campaign. That's about half of its $8.5 million goal.
Many people who are employed feel fortunate to have jobs and are donating, said Frank Lazarski, United Way president. At the same time, there are people who contributed in the past and are now unemployed and in need of food, counseling and other services provided by United Way agencies, he said.
"The recession has really created much more of an awareness of giving in the community and banning together as a community," Lazarski said.
