Forty years ago, Morrie Sage wanted a Toyota store so badly he could taste it. But Yutaka Katayama, the first president of Nissan's U.S. operations and the father of the Z car, urged him to consider Datsun instead.
In fact, Katayama the famous Mr. K told the California dealer wannabe that he couldn't afford not to become a Datsun dealer.
"In the very early meetings I went to in 1970, Mr. K would say, "Everyone in this room will become a millionaire one day,' Sage recalls.
At the time, Sage was working as a general manager at a Ford store but thought a Japanese franchise would be the way of the future.
