Tire dealers and industry experts in California are giving mixed reviews to a bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that bans lead wheel weights.

Some tire retailers and spokesmen for retailers consider the ban, which begins Jan. 1, an unreasonable attack on the industry and a needless financial burden. Others are more philosophical, considering it part of the price of doing business.

Many in the industry agree that commercial and light truck tire dealers will have a harder time balancing tires exclusively with steel weights than passenger tire retailers will.
