Some doomsayers are saying "told you so, as steep tariffs on Chinese tire imports are already affecting tire prices and supplies for private and import label marketers in the U.S.
The full effect of the tariffswhich President Obama ordered Sept. 2 on the recommendation of the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and a plea for relief by the United Steelworkers (USW)has yet to be felt, industry commenters agreed. But according to a phone survey by Tire Business of private brand companies, the impact of the tariffs has varied largely from company to company, based on how many tires any given marketer obtained from China.
