Type 2 diabetes (formally known as maturity onset diabetes) used to be a condition affecting adults only, but it is on the increase in children, too. Durban dietician Priya Lalla says you can reduce your child's risk in the following ways:
l Avoid saturated fat found in butter, chicken skin, fatty meat, processed meat and pies.
l Encourage your child to eat fibre by using brown or wholewheat bread, legumes, soya and fruits and vegetables.
l Breastfeed from birth to 12 months.
l Make sure your child eats breakfast to avoid weight gain.
l Ensure that your child is physically active for at least 30 minutes of the day.
