Two actresses, dressed in suits with micro-miniskirts, nervously prepare to read for a role in an upcoming episode of "Ally McBeal." One paces, the other sits, legs tightly crossed outside the hit series' production office.
Such auditions usually unfold somewhere in West L.A., Hollywood or Burbank. But this one is taking place in a new Hollywood adjunct, Manhattan Beach, which hits become the home of Fox Television's "Ally McBeal" and another Fox-produced series, ABC's "The Practice."
The two shows are the initial productions at Manhattan Beach Studios, the first Los Angeles-area studio complex built from the ground up since 1920.
