QUESTIONWhat was different about German air-raid shelters? THE Germans had a different approach to sheltering its people than the Allies. German planners focused their efforts on building large-scale units that could house large volumes of people, medical facilities, labs and even art collections and archives.

Personalised shelters such as the British Anderson and Morrison were not encouraged, partly for political reasons, because they did not feel under immediate threat and because a larger proportion of the German population lived in apartment blocks, with no outdoor garden space of their own.
