MANILA, Nov. 12 (PNA Features) - A farmer from Quirino Province finds himself planting and harvesting "ampalaya" (bittergourd) a very sweet thing for a living.
Bittergourd (scientific name: Momordica charantia) is a tropical and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitaceae, widely grown for edible fruit, which is among the most bitter of all vegetables.
English names for the plant and its fruit include bitter melon or bitter gourd, goya in Japanese, ampalaya in Filipino, and karella in Punjabi. South American and Caribbean names include Carilla, Balsamino and Saraseed.
