for history lecture

The New Mexico History Museum has been fielding many calls from people interested in a free lecture Thursday by Jose Esquibel on the Jewish-converso lineage of Don Juan de Onate.

The Santa Fe 400th anniversary lecture is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium.

Onate, a controversial figure in New Mexico history, led an expedition up the Rio Grande to present-day New Mexico in 1598 and founded the first Spanish capital, San Juan de los Caballeros, across the Rio Grande from San Juan Pueblo, now Ohkay Owingeh.
