Staple fiber shipments for nonwovens finally perk up; olefin posts bigger gains.

For the staple fiber-based nonwovens industry, 1998 opened with a bang. In the first quarter of 1998, producers of olefin, polyester and rayon staple shipped a total of 171 million pounds to domestic roll goods producers. This was the best quarterly figure on record, the previous high having been 166 million pounds in the third quarter of 1997.

Olefin staple sales in the latest period totaled 82 million pounds, also a new record. The previous high mark was set in the third quarter of last year, when sales amounted to 81 million pounds. The January-March 1998 figure was up from 77 ...
