Article: State to write off ,e1/439m in farmers debts.

TAXPAYERS are to foot the bill for some e1/439 million in farmers' debts accumulated between 1974 and 1998, according to an agreement the government struck with farmers' unions.

The amount concerns the debt of 1,260 farmers.

Farmers had initially asked for around e1/4100 million to be written off.

A committee set up to look into the issue decided that only e1/463 million were indeed debts connected to farming so the previous government asked the European Union for permission to dole out the money.
