NEW YORK -- Outerwear this fall is in a retail slump. A slow start in August has carried over into October, and retailers around the country predict there won't be a pickup until the weather turns.
So far this season, retailers have been making sales in baseball jackets and lightweight outerwear-related items such as fleece, nylon and berber garments. Bubble jackets, one of the most popular sellers last fall, have been stagnant in most areas, while leather outerwear has begun to check at retail in novelty silhouettes.
