People have long believed that a glass of cranberry juice a day helps keep urinary infections away, and now Rutgers University scientists say they have discovered why.

Chemical compounds in cranberries called condensed tannins were found to prevent E. coli bacterium from attaching to cells in the urinary tract and causing infection, especially in women, according to a Rutgers study published Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine.
