In the northernmost settlement on the planet, darkness and science reign. Northwest of Greenland, where Canada touches the Arctic Circle at 82.5 [degrees] N, the Canadian military base of Alert spends half of the year shrouded in night.
Previously an early warning radar station, Alert is now used to research environmental conditions in the arctic. Circled by white-coated arctic foxes, hare, and occasionally polar bears, the base is staffed by almost 100 researchers and military personnel.
