PARIS -- Paris fashion week gets underway in earnest today, and the big ideas from some of the most influential houses read like the project plan for a Girl Scout sewing badge: a skort for Chanel, a schoolgirl jumper at Jean Paul Gaultier and a silk frock at Celine.
Of course, Karl Lagerfeld's flowing version of that suburban staple, which he calls his "trompe l'oeil skirt," isn't really destined for the driving range. And Michael Kors has taken all the pouf out of the Celine party dress, instead knitting silk into a slinky siren gown. Gaultier's little jumper is a cool twist on the look of a young Japanese tourist.
