Editors' note: Tony Horwitz is a Virginia-based reporter for The Wall Street Journal and the author, most recently, of Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches From the Unfinished Civil War, to be published by Pantheon in March of 1998. While researching his book, which focuses on contemporary remembrance of the Civil War, he became interested in the topic of African Americans who served the Confederacy, and wrote an article about it in The Wall Street Journal. Southern Cultures "interviewed" Horwitz (by e-mail) on this contentious subject.
