John Polkinghorne has been one of the most effective contributors in recent years to the rapidly growing literature of the domain where science and religion meet. Professor of theoretical physics at Cambridge University before he resigned to study theology and to be ordained an Anglican priest, he carries on a great Anglican tradition that goes back to such luminaries as Robert Boyle and John Ray in the seventeenth century, and that has been carried on so ably by Polkinghorne's immediate predecessors like Eric Mascall.
