In the preface to his deeply involved and thoroughly researched biography of the Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe, Ezenwa-Ohaeto finds assurance in the fact that Achebe approved of the project. A brief note from Achebe to the publishers concludes with something of a veiled challenge, a kind of preemptive dare, and an avuncular bit of guidance: "I have no doubt that he [Ezenwa-Ohaeto] will bring to both research and writing a sense of seriousness.
