A recent study points out that lowering blood pressure below traditional goals can help cut heart attack and stroke risk in people with hypertension.

The Hypertension Optimal Treatment, also known as the HOT Study, found that the optimal diastolic blood pressure for hypertensive patients is 83 rather than the traditional 90.

Diastolic pressure is the lower number in a blood pressure reading.

The study did not address the goal of systolic blood pressure, the higher number in a reading. But the study did conclude that optimal blood pressure is 120/80.
