Article: Eldridge Cleaver, ex-Black Panther, author, political conservative, dies.(National Report)

Eldridge Cleaver, one of the most prominent activists of the 1960s and former leader of the Black Panther Party, recently died in Pomona, CA. He was 62.

The L.A. Times quoted Peter A Panel, a friend who was with Cleaver just before he died, as saying that the activist had been battling prostate cancer and was taking insulin.

He was born Leroy Eldridge Cleaver near Little Rock, AR, in 1935. The family later moved to the Watts section of L.A. His parents separated when he was 13. Soon afterward, he began numerous brushes with law enforcement and eventually landed in Soledad prison.
