A profound and visceral sense of place is one of the qualities that is most memorable about Karen Hesse's writing. As I think about my relationship with Karen Hesse, I think not about what things happened, but where they happened. The sense of place in Karen's books is so strong that, as her friend and editor, when I think of Karen, I think of places.
My first experience of Karen was in a small, crowded cubicle at Scholastic, where I worked as an assistant editor.
