Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, died October 12 after being brutally attacked in Laramie on October 7. Shepard, 21, died at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, after being tied to a wooden fence for 18 hours in severe weather conditions. He had been in a coma after having his skull beaten so severely that doctors were unable to operate. Shepard was also burned and cut. Charges against two men being held for the attack, Arthur Henderson, 21, and Aaron James McKinney, 22, were upgraded to include first-degree murder. Two women, Chastity Pasley, 20, and Kristen Price, 18, have also been charged as accessories to the crime.
