Professor Barry's book, originally published in French as La Senegambie du [xv.sup.e] au [xix.sup.e] siecle: traite negriere, islam et conquete coloniale (1988), lucidly translated by Mr. Ayi Kwei Armah, is a work of synthesis that makes a major contribution to the historiography of African history, and in particular to the study of the Atlantic trade, based on articulation of complex materials from Portuguese, Dutch, French, and English records, and other works as well as local sources.
