SAN DIEGO, California - Emergency physicians are on the front line of America's health care system, treating the most acute patients and making split-second, life-and-death decisions every day. They often are the first to see the results of society's ills - violence, drug abuse, sexual abuse, elderly abandonment. More than 3,400 physicians who specialize in emergency medicine gathered here in mid-October to learn new techniques and discuss their concerns during the annual meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
