The tropical sun was setting over the Pacific, casting reds and oranges over the reefs, beaches, and volcanic cones of the tiny, remote island of Kosrae. All week it had been peaceful at the Sandy Beach Hotel, a little family run place on a beach just off the narrow track that serves as Kosrae's main thoroughfare. The half dozen small villages that ring this verdant, tropical isle shut down at night. At dusk the handful of Sandy Beach guests gather on porches to watch seabirds and men with throw-nets hunt unseen reef fish before another explosive sunset.
