At first glance Michael Mazur's recent painterly abstractions seem to have taken a sharp turn away from his origins in representation. Thin layers of paint applied with broad strokes have been allowed to drip down the canvases, creating complex networks of color and gesture. But the initial impression is deceptive. Although some of the titles refer the viewer to the Cape Cod environs that have been a recurring subject in Mazur's work, an even more important key is his interest in traditional Chinese landscape painting.
