A generation ago, spotting Canada geese (Branta canadensis) was a notable event in many parts of New York State. Today, in ever-growing numbers, they fly overhead in formation, winter-over by the hundreds in yards and fields and generally hang out in gaggles year-round wherever they find food, water and nesting space.
Bird watchers love to view this magnificent bird which evokes thoughts of wide open spaces and a life of freedom. But for people who contend with yards full of goose droppings and big, cranky birds defending nests in the spring, it's a whole different stow.
