The rapid growth of frame relay network services continues unabated. Since many enterprise network managers regard public frame relay as a cheaper replacement for full-period leased lines, nearly all frame relay services are based on permanent virtual circuits (PVCs).
In contrast, customer demand for frame relay switched virtual circuits (SVCs) has yet to materialize. This has baffled many switch vendors and careers, given the many positive attributes of SVC-based networks. So what's going on here? Will SVCs ever become popular in frame relay or ATM WANs?
