Article: Wireless data - What's real? What's wrong?

Mobile data has been disappointing. It has a future, but it won't be delivered by the same people who bring you wireless voice.

About five years ago, wireless data was a hot topic, as big as the Internet, as vital as ATM. Wireless data was going to free us from our desks, give us anytime, anywhere connection to everyone, whiten our teeth and improve productivity, customer service and the bottom line all in the bargain. Suffice it to say that this nirvana has not been achieved. The reality of wireless data has met few people's expectations and, despite a wide range of systems and capabilities, outside a few vertical markets, wireless data remains largely a curiosity.
