In a province still immersed in its own mythology and romance, curators Cathy Mastin and Catherine Crowston have taken up the theme of frontier as an organizing principle through which to look at both Alberta's contemporary production and the roles that artists have played historically. The first incarnation of the Alberta Biennial (1996), curated by the senior curators of two major Alberta institutions, established a successful showcase for the breadth of contemporary art practice in Alberta.
