ABSTRACT
FOR AS LONG AS MOST OF US CAN remember, Alberta has been thought of as the most right-wing part of the country, but, until fairly recently, it was considered a kind of enclave, distinct and distant. All that has changed. Alberta's influence, and leadership, is now undeniable: on the economic front -- cuts to social spending, taxation and deficits -- and, less successfully, in the ideological arena of "family values" and small government.
Alberta, of course, is not monolithic. As a friend said of Calgary, "It's like there are two cities here. One goes to restaurants, movies or bars and lives just like people do in other cities. The other goes to ...
