By now, the old boys' networks have been exposed -- those subterranean clubs, membership to which unlocks the doors one thought opened only to the key of merit. So too have the lobby groups been exposed -- political influence, we now know, is a well-developed business, and the person who wants representation best not waste time talking to an MP but join a lobby group instead.
After years of trying to "make it" as a writer and composer, I have uncovered yet another invisible club -- the academic club. Actually, it's not so much a club as a style -- and yet I'd be hard pressed to describe it.
