Domestic violence is recognized as a pervasive social problem in Canada. A 1994 Statistics Canada survey found that one in four Canadian women had been subjected to some sort of abuse during a relationship with a spouse or partner. A subsequent study found that a married woman is nine times more likely to be killed by her intimate partner than by a total stranger. The situation for Aboriginal women is even more dire. A 1989 study conducted by the Ontario Native Women's Association found that nine in ten Aboriginal women surveyed had been abused.
